ART OF THE REVIEW
Art of the Review is a project dedicated to reigniting the spark, excitement, and inspiration that comes from seeing art exhibitions in person. The series incorporates photography, collage, found poetry, and animation to create visual reviews of opening receptions at contemporary art museums and festivals in the Southeast.
Since the 2020 pandemic, artists seem to be stuck in a digital loop - endlessly scrolling on social media to gain inspiration and cutting out real world connections, dodging the required note-taking and tangible human experiences needed for true visual research. The goal of Art of the Review is to make crowded art exhibitions less intimidating by creating assignments in documentation and review. This project reminds us of the joy of going to a gallery, seeing an exhibition in person, immersing oneself in the conversations and chatter about each piece, discovering reflections of oneself and community in the artwork, and finding bits of inspiration to take home. These are not written critiques on the artworks and curation itself, but more of a visual interpretation of how the exhibit feels to the viewer - specifically how an opening reception may feel to a viewer who may not be comfortable in crowded, loud spaces or someone uncomfortable in institutional arts spaces.
